An Indian agricultural worker in Italy passed away after being abandoned on the roadside with a severed arm by his employer
Satnam Singh, an Indian farm laborer, tragically passed away in a hospital after suffering a severe work-related injury on a farm near Latina, Italy, approximately 50 kilometers from Rome. His arm was accidentally severed while operating a hay-cutting machine. Instead of receiving immediate medical attention, he was left abandoned on the roadside near his residence. This incident has sparked widespread condemnation, including from Italy’s Labour Minister Marina Calderone, who described it as a barbaric act.
The Indian Embassy in Italy confirmed Singh’s death and expressed its commitment to providing consular assistance to his family. They are actively engaging with local authorities to ensure all necessary support is provided during this difficult time. Singh, reported to be around 31 years old, was working in Italy without legal documentation, highlighting the challenges faced by many migrant workers in precarious employment situations. According to reports, Singh’s wife and friends alerted the authorities after discovering him in critical condition. Emergency services responded by dispatching an air ambulance to transport him to a hospital. The opposition Democratic Party of Italy has also raised concerns about the working conditions that may have contributed to Singh’s tragic accident and subsequent treatment.
This heartbreaking incident has underscored broader issues surrounding migrant laborers’ rights and workplace safety in agricultural sectors across Europe. It serves as a poignant reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by migrant workers, often working in challenging conditions without adequate legal protections or access to healthcare.
