Donald Trump promises to end Russia-Ukraine war
On Friday, US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, vowing to end the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump expressed his gratitude to Zelenskyy for reaching out and promised to end the conflict that has caused immense loss and suffering.
Trump stated that both sides could negotiate a deal to end the violence and pave the way for prosperity. Following the conversation, Zelenskyy posted on X, acknowledging the call with Trump, congratulating him on the Republican nomination, and condemning the recent assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. He wished Trump strength and safety.
Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of bipartisan American support for Ukraine’s fight for freedom and independence. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the US assistance in resisting Russian aggression. He noted that Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and villages is continous. Zelenskyy and Trump agreed to discuss steps for achieving a fair and lasting peace in a personal meeting.
Since February 2022, the United States has provided tens of billions of dollars in military aid to Kyiv. However, if Donald Trump wins the upcoming November election, this support might be reconsidered. Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, leads the isolationist faction of congressional Republicans, advocating for an end to aid to Ukraine.
Vance was a staunch opponent of the $61 billion military aid package for Ukraine, during which Russia gained ground on the battlefield. At the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Thursday, Trump declared that he could resolve international crises swiftly. Trump claimed that he could “stop wars with a telephone call.”
Trump’s history with Zelenskyy dates back to his presidency. In 2019, Trump was impeached for withholding military aid to Ukraine while pressuring Zelenskyy to investigate his election opponent, Biden.
