NDA no more in majority in Rajya Sabha, tally dips to 86

The retirement of four BJP-nominated members from the Rajya Sabha has decreased the party’s presence in the Upper House of the Indian Parliament.

With their exit, the BJP’s count has dropped to 86 seats, and the broader National Democratic Alliance (NDA) now holds 101 seats, falling short of the majority mark of 113 in a full house of 245 members. Currently, the Rajya Sabha has 225 members due to vacancies. The Congress-led INDIA alliance has 87 members, indicating a closely contested balance in the Rajya Sabha. This situation forces the BJP to seek support from non-NDA parties to pass legislation.

Key potential allies include Tamil Nadu’s AIADMK and Andhra Pradesh’s YSR Congress Party, which could collectively offer 15 votes. However, strained relations with AIADMK and shifting dynamics with other regional parties may challenge the BJP’s ability to secure necessary support. Further complicating the BJP’s legislative efforts is the withdrawal of issue-based support from former ally Biju Janata Dal (BJD) of Odisha, following its recent electoral defeat to the BJP in state elections.

The Rajya Sabha currently has 20 vacant seats, with elections expected to fill 11 of these. The BJP-led alliance has a strong chance of winning additional seats from states like Assam, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Tripura. Success in these elections could potentially restore or even increase the NDA’s strength in the Rajya Sabha.

The political landscape is poised for further shifts with the upcoming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and other states, which are expected to significantly impact the composition and dynamics within the Rajya Sabha. These elections will be critical for both the ruling alliance and the opposition, particularly in securing influential positions such as the Leader of the Opposition, a role the Congress is actively vying for. The outcomes of these elections will not only determine the immediate balance of power but also shape the legislative strategies and alliances in the Upper House of Parliament.
